While most people learn to drive through driving lessons, I feel that it is really helpful to practise between lessons where there is an opportunity to do this with a suitable (and willing) qualified driver (who must be least 21 years old and have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years). When practice sessions are being considered, I offer my support to ensure that these complement driving lessons (e.g. by suggesting areas to drive, offering an informal meeting with the supervising driver beforehand or allowing them to sit in the back of the car during a lesson).
If practising between lessons in an option for you, it is important that you are suitably insured to drive the car you will be practising in. While the supervising driver may choose to add you to their own insurance, it is possible to have an insurance policy specifically to cover the learner driver (that enables a learner driver to practise in a family’s, relative’s or friend’s car, without risking the no claims bonus of the qualified driver). As the cost of insurance for a learner can be as little as around £80 for 30 days, it can be a cost effective way of reducing the overall cost of learning to drive (as it could mean requiring fewer driving lessons as insurance for one month could be less than 2 x 2 hour lessons). While I can’t recommend a specific insurance product or advise which insurance cover is the best for you, I am happy to introduce the following three insurance products. I would strongly suggest shopping around and comparing the cost and features of different policies to ensure that the product you choose is the right one for you.
- National Learner Driver Insurance
This is only available through professional driving instructors. National Learner Driver Insurance offers 6 policy options starting at 14 days and can be renewed as many times as required. The minimum age of the supervising driver is 25 years old and a UK resident for at least 2 years.

Well done Damian on passing your test at Watnall today, at your first attempt with only 3 minor faults (and for maintaining my record of every student of the Nottingham Boys High School passing first time!). It was a pleasure to teach you and I wish you many happy years of safe and enjoyable driving ahead of you.
Martin is a great instructor. He never gets angry or frustrated and always allows you to learn at your own pace and never rushes you. I would highly recommend his services as an instructor. Damian
Well done Tom on passing your driving test today at Beeston Test Centre – the first pupil I’ve had whose had a test at the new test centre in Nottingham. Passing on your first attempt, with only 2 minor faults (and after only 28 hours of lessons ) is a testimony to your good driving skills, which you have demonstrated consistently (lesson after lesson). I look forward to seeing you for a Pass Plus course later this year.
I thought Martin was a very good instructor who picked up and taught to my learning style very quickly, which enabled me to grasp concepts and manoeuvres easily and led me to pass my test first time. Tom
Congratulations Gichanga on not just passing your test at Watnall today but on passing with just one minor fault, which demonstrates just how good your driving has become. Now you can get a car and enjoy driving in this gorgeous summer weather!
Thank you for all the support and patience you gave me throughout my driving period. Rain, snow or sunshine, you collected me on time. You ensured I did not miss my lessons even getting me slots at short notice. You have made me a confident driver. I could not have asked for a better instructor. It’s a great job you are doing out there and keep doing it. Thanks, Gichanga.
